The Best of Both Worlds: Exploring Nature Through Montessori & Reggio Emilia
At Montessori Children’s Academy (MCA), we believe that early childhood education should be as vibrant and diverse as a Miami sunset. While our foundation is firmly rooted in the Montessori method, we also draw deep inspiration from the Reggio Emilia approach.
By combining these two world-renowned Italian philosophies, we create a unique, nature-based learning experience that you won’t find anywhere else in Miami.
🌱 The Environment as the “Third Teacher”
In Reggio Emilia philosophy, the environment is considered the “Third Teacher.” This means every corner of our campus, from our sun-drenched classrooms to our lush butterfly gardens, is intentionally designed to provoke wonder and curiosity.
While Montessori provides the child with the tools for independence (the “How”), Reggio Emilia encourages the child to express their “hundred languages”—art, movement, song, and play (the “What”). Together, they support:
Independence & Confidence: Montessori climbing structures allow children to test their physical limits safely.
The Hundred Languages of Children: Following the Reggio principle, children might “talk” about a flower by drawing it, dancing like it, or carefully watering it.
Concentration & Calm: Our natural spaces provide a “soft fascination” that reduces stress and helps children focus better when they return to indoor work.
🦋 Our Butterfly Garden: A Living Laboratory
Our Miami butterfly garden is the perfect example of this hybrid approach. It isn’t just a garden; it’s a living classroom where science meets art.
The Montessori Element: Children use real gardening tools to care for plants, developing Practical Life skills and a sense of responsibility.
The Reggio Element: Teachers document the children’s observations. If a student is fascinated by a caterpillar, the “curriculum” might shift for a week to explore cocoons through painting, clay modeling, and storytelling.
Specialized Playgrounds for Every Stage of Development
Toddler Playground (12–24 Months)
At this age, children are building their earliest foundations of balance, coordination, and confidence. Our toddler playground is intentionally designed to support these first steps toward independence.
What Makes This Space Unique:
• Soft, sensory‑rich textures that invite safe exploration
• Low climbing structures that encourage movement without overwhelming little bodies
• Simple pathways and open space for practicing walking, running, and navigating the world
• Gentle nature elements—flowers, leaves, stones—that spark curiosity and early observation skills
This environment allows toddlers to explore freely while feeling secure, supported, and capable. Every detail is designed to help them develop confidence in their bodies and trust in themselves.
Preschool Playground (3–4 Years)
As children grow, their needs shift toward more complex movement, imaginative play, and early social collaboration. Our preschool playground is designed to meet these developmental milestones with intention.
What Makes This Space Special:
• Larger climbing structures that challenge balance, strength, and problem‑solving
• Open‑ended nature materials—logs, branches, loose parts—that inspire creativity and imaginative play
• Spaces for teamwork where children build, collaborate, and negotiate ideas
• Gardens and natural elements that deepen their connection to the environment
This playground supports the growing independence of 3‑ and 4‑year‑olds while giving them opportunities to practice social skills, creativity, and more advanced physical coordination.pecialized Playgrounds for Every Stage
Why This Combination Matters for Miami Parents
In a fast-paced city, we provide a sanctuary. By blending the structure of Montessori with the creative inquiry of Reggio Emilia, we ensure your child is not only “school-ready” but “life-ready.” They learn to follow a process and think outside the box.
